CANADA IN BRIEF

CANADA IN BRIEF

Topp gets boost for bid to lead federal NDP
SASKATOON (CP) — Federal NDP leadership candidate Brian Topp received a big boost Tuesday in the party’s birthplace when former Saskatchewan premier Roy Romanow said he was backing him to replace the late Jack Layton.

"The NDP must present a national governing alternative that speaks to Canadians in every part of the country," Romanow said in a statement for a news conference in Saskatoon.

"I worked closely with Brian and I know that he has the right combination of skills and experience to get the job done. He is disciplined, principled and is deeply committed to a better future for every Canadian."

Topp, who is currently NDP president, once served as Romanow’s deputy chief of staff. He said Romanow’s support means a lot.

Hockey rinks may replace air and space museum
TORONTO (CP) — The Canadian Air and Space Museum — a repository of Canadian aviation history in north Toronto — has been shut down and will apparently be replaced by hockey rinks.

Museum chairman Ian McDougall says the landlord, Parc Downsview Park, was in the process of changing the locks on Tuesday afternoon.

McDougall says the museum was behind on its rent by about $120,000, but had begun generating more revenue and was in a position to begin making payments.

Study: Cellphone-only use will soon reach 2 million
MONTREAL (CP) — Several million Canadians will have only cellphone service by the end of the year as they increasingly ditch their more expensive landline telephones, suggests a new study.

About one in seven households — or two million in total — will have just cellphone service by the end of 2011, the Convergence Consulting Group said Tuesday.

"This is happening because prices have come down so radically," said Brahm Eiley, co-founder of the Toronto-based consulting firm.

Tim Hortons takes brand to Dubai in first export
TORONTO (CP) — Tim Hortons’ new Dubai location represents "the first true export of the brand," CEO Paul House said Tuesday, but even as the outlet opened its doors to crowds of Canadian expats, the chain is not rushing toward a global presence.

"It’s a historic moment," House said of the Dubai "cafe and bake shop" opened Saturday, which generated online buzz among homesick Canadians who waited in long lineups to seek out the trademark double-double.
